It was a night to remember as a spectacular totallunar eclipseadorned the night sky with its reddish hues!Between late last night and early this morning, a rareblood moon lunar eclipse— which hasn’t happened in the U.S. since 2022 — was visible forskywatchersacross most of North and South America, as well as the west side of Africa and Europe, the eastern parts of Australia and Russia and northern Japan.A total lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth andmoonare aligned in space, with Earth in the middle, placing a shadow over themoon. The stellar event lasted an hour and six minutes, beginning close to midnight ET, with totality — which is when the Earth’s shadow completely covers themoon— from 2:26 a.m. to 3:32 a.m. ET, according toEarthSky.Also known as the “Worm Moon” (per theFarmer’s Almanac), the Earth casts a reddish shadow when the moon is in the umbra of the Earth, hence the name Blood Moon.It will always depend on how sunlight travels through Earth’s atmosphere — longer wavelengths of red light are more likely to pass through, whereas blue light has shorter wavelengths, which become scattered. The same occurs when sunsets appear orange and the sky blue.According toNASA, we won’t see another total lunar eclipse until March 2026.In the meantime, here are some must-see photos of the blood moon lunar eclipse from around the world.
