11 Confirmed Dead After Mass Shooting at Adult Education School in Sweden: 'Incredibly Tragic Event'

Police in Sweden have shared an update on the death toll following ashooting at an adult education school, confirming that at least 11 people have died from the incident.

Officers said the person who they believe is the suspect is among the deceased and they believe they “acted alone without ideological motive,” per the release.

“It is an incredibly tragic event that has affected primarily the victims and their relatives, and affects all of Sweden,” local police chief Roberto Eid Forest said in a statement.

“At present, there are 11 deaths due to the incident. The number of injured is still unclear,” police added, before later confirming in an updatedrelease, “Six adult patients are being treated in hospital. All operated patients are now stable.”

Officers urged people “not to spread rumors and speculation” in the release, adding, “At present, the police do not see any general threat to schools and preschools in the country. This also applies to adult education.”

Police said they did not “currently see any danger to the public” and will continue to monitor “the situation, evaluating and assessing new information on an ongoing basis to determine whether we need to take action.”

TheAssociated Pressreported that the school serves people over the age of 20 and offers both primary and secondary school classes. It’s also thought to include programs for immigrants trying to learn Swedish and vocational training for people with intellectual disabilities.

Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, said in a translatedpost on Xon Tuesday, “It is with sadness that I have received information about the terrible act of violence in Örebro. My thoughts are with those who have been affected and their relatives.”

“It is a very painful day for all of Sweden. My thoughts are also with all those whose normal school day was replaced with terror. Being confined to a classroom with fear for your own life is a nightmare that no one should have to experience,” he added in the post.

Peter Larsson, Mayor of Örebro Municipality, said in anews release, “We are all thinking first and foremost of those affected and everyone close to them, and I want to express my deepest sympathy to them.”

“We in Örebro Municipality take an incident like this very seriously, which affects both the individual and our society,” Larsson insisted, adding that “Now we need to help each other to move forward.”
