12-Year-Old Boy Dies in Ski Accident on New Hampshire Mountain: 'Tragic Loss'

A 12-year-old boy is dead following a New Year’s Eve skiing accident at a New Hampshire mountain, authorities said.

According to a Conway Police Department news release provided to PEOPLE, the incident occurred on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at around 10:44 a.m. local time. In the statement, authorities said that the North Conway Fire/Rescue responded to Cranmore Mountain following a report of a boy who appeared to have hit a tree while skiing on the Bandit Trail.

The Bandit Trail is described as an intermediate-level trail, according to police.

“On behalf of the Conway Police Department, and all the first responders who assisted, I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family members of the 12-year-old boy,” said Conway Police Chief Christopher Mattei in the news release.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE on Friday, Jan. 3, a spokesperson for the resort said: “On behalf of Cranmore Mountain Resort, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.  The entire Cranmore family grieves this tragic loss.”
