2 Teens Among 4 Killed After Car Hits Charter Bus in Triple Car Crash on Washington Highway

The driver was attempting to pass another car when they traveled into the opposite lane, hitting the car they were trying to pass in the first place,CBS affiliate KIROreported.

The 17 year old and another 17-year-old male passenger in the Toyota were pronounced dead at the scene as well as the 66-year-old bus driver, who was a resident of Spokane, officials added.

“A total of 4 individuals lost their lives and many were injured. State Route 28 was closed for approximately 10 hours while District 6 WSP investigated the collision,” Washington State Patrol added.

According to KIRO, the passengers on the charter bus ranged in age from 18 to 84, and the third car also had two children, ages 6 and 8, in the backseat. Neither were injured, the outlet reported.

“As we have been cooperating fully with authorities during the investigation of the incident, we have learned that an unknown vehicle attempted an unsafe pass while traveling at an excessive speed,” Northwestern Stage Lines told the outlet. “Sadly, our talented and dedicated driver was among the fatalities, as well as the 2 individuals in the car.”

“We have and will continue to work closely with the Washington State Troopers and WSDOT as we seek to understand additional details regarding this tragic event,” the company added. “The safety and well-being of our passengers, employees, and the communities we serve remains our top priority.”

Washington State Patrol noted that the crash remains under investigation.

“District 6 Criminal Investigation Unit and WSP Major Accident Investigation Team will be assuming the primary investigation,” authorities said.
