A pregnant California teacher who was a few months from giving birth to her first child died last month after falling during a hiking trip in Greece. Clara Thomann, 33, a science teacher at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, was vacationing in the Greek Islands when she slipped and fell about 164 feet down a gorge near Plakias, Crete on Dec. 23, multiple outlets reported.

A six-month pregnant teacher from California has died in hospital after falling down a gorge while hiking in Greece, according to reports.

Clara Thomann, 33, from Santa Barbara was left critically injured after she “slipped and fell” 164 feet down a gorge in Preveli on the Greek island of Crete on the afternoon of Dec. 23, perSFGateand local outletsGreek ReporterandNea Kriti.

Thomann had been vacationing in Greece with her partner Elliott Finn ahead of welcoming her first child,SF Gatereported.

The expectant mother was pronounced brain-dead from her injuries on Sunday, Dec. 29, perGreek Reporter.

Thomann’s family said they are “heartbroken” in aCaringBridge postand shared that they have donated her organs, including her heart, liver, and pancreas, following her wishes.

“Clara loved helping and teaching others. Naturally, she is an organ donor and we are happy to report that her heart, liver, and pancreas have already been accepted for donation," they shared. “We’ve been yowling and sobbing on the phone with friends and family, laughing … and thinking about all the lessons Clara taught us.”

Our hearts break for her family and for all of us who are feeling this loss.”

“Elliott will carry some of the ashes to a couple sites in Greece and Turkey that he wanted to share with Clara. The majority of the ashes will travel to the states with Barb, Beth, and Greg in a few days,” the family wrote.

A mother of one of Thomann’s students, Jennifer Gamez-Sparrow, wrote in response, “My son was her student and she was his favorite teacher. I appreciated the leadership she showed in her classroom and how she made physics fun … She will be missed but never forgotten.”
