Seven people were injured, three of them critically, after an apparent gas grill explosion at a resort in Hawaii.

Seven people, ages 18 to 74, were injured in the explosion in Kāʻanapali, according to police.

Three people were in critical condition on Thursday and one was “transported via medevac to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room for further treatment,” officials added.

A preliminary investigation suggests that there was an explosion possibly involving liquefied petroleum gas, which the police department said “supplies common area BBQs.”

“Witness statements indicate a possible grill malfunction before the incident,” police added.

“You can tell it wasn’t like a firework or something somebody planned,” David Flint recalled, noting that the area tends to be crowded. “It was pretty scary.”

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
