American Airlines Flight Forced into Sudden Landing at JFK After 'Reported Bird Strike' on Engine: WATCH

AnAmerican Airlinesflight was forced to make a sudden landing at JFK Airport shortly after takeoff following reported bird strike on Thursday, Dec. 12.

According toABC6 Action Newsand WCNC reporterVanessa Ruffes, a passenger on the flight captured the moment a bird seemingly hit one of the plane’s engines.

The video — which was filmed onboard a flight from New York City’sLaGuardia Airport— was posted toX(formerly Twitter) andFacebook.

It showed buildings illuminated on the ground below moments before a burst of light came from the plane’s engine.

The flight toward Charlotte, North Carolina, took off from LaGuardia just after 7 p.m. local time with 190 customers and six crew members, the airline confirmed to PEOPLE.

Just one engine could be used after the incident caused the Airbus A321 to be redirected to JFK, according to ABC6 Action News,

Per the outlet, the pilot reported to ATC, “It appears we have an engine failure, but we’re still kind of working through to figure out what’s going on … We hit birds on the on the way out.”

“American Airlines flight 1722 with service from New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Charlotte (CLT) diverted to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) due to a reported bird strike,” American Airlines confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.

No injuries were reported from the incident, the airline added.

Passengers were provided with hotel accommodations with plans for the flight to re-depart on the morning of Friday, Dec. 13.
