Anthony Mackie's Son Had This Hilarious Reaction When theCaptain AmericaTrailer Played Before a Movie (Exclusive)

Some heroes wear capes —Anthony Mackiewears an iconic red, white and blue suit, which fails to impress his sons.

On a recent outing to seeSonic the Hedgehog 3with his kids, the 46-year-old father of four sat down after loading the family up with nachos when the trailer for his new movieCaptain America: Brave New Worldplayed.

“My boys are not paying attention,’ ” Mackie tells PEOPLE, chuckling as he recalls how his 8-year-old began to watch. “He slowly turns and looks at me, then he looks back at the screen.”

TheSonicmovie started, and the Mackie boys moved on: “It has never been a topic of conversation.”

“My boys are so funny because their only goal is to beat me at board games,” continues Mackie, who says they don’t really care that he’s a movie star. (He shares his sons, who range in age from 8 to 15, with his ex-wife Sheletta Chapital.)

“We play board games all the time, and my job never comes in into question. They just love me and appreciate me as dad. So my first job, my most important job, is just being a good dad, being the dad that my dad was for me. My work part of it doesn’t really matter.”

Mackie’s sons may shrug off his headlining role as Captain America, but to the actor, it is indeed a big deal. “This moment means everything,” says Mackie, 46, who broke out in 2002’s8 MilestarringEminemshortly after graduating from New York’s Juilliard School.

He’s been a Hollywood staple since, with acclaimed turns in movies like 2010’s Oscar-winningThe Hurt Lockerand 2017’sDetroit. But landingCaptain Americais the realization of a longtime dream.

Mackie is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He joined the family in 2014’sCaptain America: The Winter Soldieras Sam Wilson, a former Air Force rescue squadron member and one of the Avengers known as Falcon.

At the end of 2019’sAvengers: Endgamethe former Captain America, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), passed Cap’s shield to Wilson.

Mackie says his pal Evans was equally supportive offscreen: “He said, ‘You’re going to be great.’”

Director Julius Onah says Mackie “embodies those core values of Captain America: justice, integrity, empathy. I would see it every day on-set: he would come in, shake the hands of the entire crew.”

Captain America: Brave New Worldis in theaters on Friday, Feb. 14.
