David Foster Shares New Song from His Upcoming Betty Boop Musical: 'So Long in the Making' (Exclusive)

David Fosteris dropping another single from his upcoming Broadway show.

PEOPLE can exclusively premiere the 16-time Grammy winner’s latest offering from theBoop! The Musicalsoundtrack, “Something to Shout About,” before it’s officially out March 11. Jasmine Amy Rogers who stars as the iconic Betty Boop in the stage production, sings the ballad.

Foster, 75, tells PEOPLE “Something to Shout About” is the “11 o’clock number” inBoop! The Musical, opening April 5 at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City, and marks the point in the show “where everybody gets excited.”

“It’s in the second act, deep into the second act. And we originally wrote this song for early on in the first act,” Foster says. “And Jerry Mitchell, the great director of ours, said this song is too good to go there. I think it could move to the second act and be the 11 o’clock number. So we adjusted it and beefed it up a little bit, and it really came out great.”

Foster adds that “Something to Shout About” speaks to the broader story of the classic animated character inBoop! The Musical.

“She has everything in her life, but she still has, she still needs something to shout about that she hasn’t found,” he says. “And if you see the play, you’ll understand.”

The new single is Foster’s second release leading up to the show, following “Where I Wanna Be.” As the show’s opening night approaches, he reveals the musical has been in the works for over a decade.

His first Broadway musical,Boop!is the latest addition to Foster’s repertoire, which ranges from albumsDavid Fosterin 1986 to 2020’sEleven Words, and the show mark a shift into writing for him. Despite being a “novice,” he welcomed the new endeavor.

“They came along, and it was just right in the right in the right time in my life, when I was like, ‘I need a new challenge. I want to move the goalpost. This seems like the right move for me,’” Foster says.

The full album will be available this Spring.Boop! The Musicalbegins previews March 11 before its April 5 opening night. Foster’s collaborators include Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, lyricist Susan Birkenhead and book writer Bob Martin.
