Emilia Pérezstar Karla Sofía Gascón is making history.

On Monday, Dec. 9, the performer became the first out transgender woman to be nominated in a film category.

Gascón, who vies against Amy Adams (Nightbitch), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance) and Zendaya (Challengers) in the best actress in a musical or comedy category, was previously honored at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in May, where she shared the best actress prize with costarsZoe Saldaña,Selena Gomezand Adriana Paz.

In the musical crime dramaEmilia Pérez, the 52-year-old native of Spain plays Manitas, a Mexican cartel leader who hires a lawyer named Rita (fellow nomineeSaldaña) to help him transition into living as a woman named Emilia Pérez. Things get even more complicated when Pèrez decides years later that she wants to reunite with the family she left behind.
