Family of College Student Who Died After Off-Campus Fraternity Ritual Speaks Out: ‘Seeking the Truth'

College Student, Caleb Wilson, 20, Reportedly Dies After Taking Part in Off-Campus Fraternity Ritual

Family members are speaking out after a 20-year-old college student died after reportedly taking part in an off-campus fraternity ritual.

Chancellor John K. Pierre said in a statement shared on thecollege’s Facebook pagethat “an off-campus incident is believed to have contributed to Caleb’s death.”

They also said they “are committed to seeking the truth about the circumstances surrounding Caleb’s passing and ensuring that no other family has to endure such a tragedy.”

“The loss of Caleb has left an unimaginable void in our hearts, but your kindness and compassion have provided some solace,” the family said in the statement. “Caleb was a bright and talented young man with a promising future ahead of him.”

They added, “His passion for life, his dedication to his studies, and his love for music and the Southern University ‘Human Jukebox’ Marching Band were just a few of the many qualities that made him an extraordinary person.”

Pierre said in his statement that the university “is cooperating fully” with authorities and their investigation into Wilson’s death.

Wilson’s family thanked authorities with the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) and Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO), as well as the Southern University community for their support following Wilson’s death.

“As we navigate this painful journey, we ask for your continued prayers and respect for our privacy,” the family said in the statement. “We find comfort in knowing that Caleb’s spirit lives on in the memories we cherish and the love we hold for him. Thank you once again for your unwavering support.”

The BRPD and JPSO did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

All club recruiting activities were suspended at Southern University in the wake of Wilson’s death, according toThe Advocate.

On Friday, Feb. 28, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity International President Ricky L. Lewis described Wilson as “a beloved son, grandson, brother, nephew and cousin” who was also “a scholar, an exceptional member of the Southern University Marching Band and a passionate and dedicated leader in student life.”

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity International did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
