Fla. Woman, 25, Missing for Months Unexpectedly Gives Birth on N.Y.C. Subway Car with Help of Fellow Passengers

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 11:35 a.m. local time, the New York Police Department received a call that the woman had just given birth at the 34th Street-Herald Square subway station, Detective Andrew Lava tells PEOPLE.

The mom and newborn were taken to Bellevue Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the U.S., located in Kips Bay.

Saint Pierre’s older sister, Stephania, confirmed her identity after seeing a video of her giving birth on social media, per theTimes.

“Oh, my God, look at her little face!” Stephania told the paper, adding that she recognized her sister’s pink duffel bag on a subway seat and heard her voice as another passenger lifted the infant.

“Oh, my God, I am going to cry! That’s my first niece!" she added.

Stefania told the outlet she knew her sister was pregnant and was unsure why she was in New York City.

According to KABC, one passenger produced a pocket knife to cut the umbilical cord while others informed the conductor to stop the train and called 911.

Riley Allen, another passenger on the train, told another local station,WPIX, that she produced the knife after hearing those assisting the mother asking for help.

“They were asking, ‘Does anybody have scissors? Does anyone on the train have scissors?’ Because the train was still moving. And I said, ‘I have a pocket knife,’ ” Allen said.

Around the time of police responding to the medical emergency, New York City Transitposted on Xthat delays were to be expected on the N/Q/R/W lines.

“Southbound R/W trains are delayed while we remove a train from service and get medical help for someone at 34 St-Herald Sq.”

An hour later, NYCT released an update that Southbound N/Q/R/W trains were running, but with delays.

“Only in NYC,” Brown captioned the video, writing over the top of it in white text, “POV you’re headed to work and witness someone giving birth on the train 🥲🥲🥲🥲.”
