Husband Tries to Reassure Wife About Her Outfit While She Gets Ready for Work, Now She’s Angry: 'Wasn't Having Any of It'

A husband was left wondering if he made a mistake after trying to reassure his wife about her outfit.

In apostto Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, the 28-year-old husband recounted the morning with his wife, 27, as she panicked over what to wear to a career panel at her old high school.

At first, the original poster (OP) wrote that his wife opted for a white blazer and asked him to use a Tide pen to get a stain out. “But then she realized it looked too ‘ostentatious’ and decided against it,” the OP further noted.

Instead, his wife tried on a gray blazer with black dress pants and a green top — and when she came downstairs to show him the outfit, he “enthusiastically told her that she looked good,” the user wrote. “But she wasn’t convinced and said that the pants and blazer didn’t match very well.”

“I tried to compliment her again and then she asked me not to lie to her,” the OP continued, adding that he attempted “to be as constructive as possible” and even suggested that they could look into getting more matching outfit options “soon.”

He then made his wife coffee, and she got ready to leave the house — but as she was heading out the door, the OP told her, “Remember, they’re there for what you say, not for how you look.”

“She just stared at me like I cut her with a knife,” the Reddit user wrote. “As she was walking to her car, she turned and said, ‘Jeez, I didn’t think I lookedthatbad,’ and walked away. I tried to clarify, but she wasn’t having any of it.”

“Maybe he’s only been married a few days if he thinks that’s an OK thing to say,” wrote one Redditor.

Another agreed, adding: “Knowing full well that she was already not liking her outfit choices, that comment was never going to land as OP intended. He isn’t an a——, just oblivious. The wife isn’t an a—— either for taking it how she did.”

Others, however, suggested that they would have interpreted the husband’s statement as he intended and commended him for his thoughtfulness.

“As a woman, I honestly thought it was a really good reminder and I think I’d appreciate hearing it in the moment,” a commenter chimed in.

“I appreciate it too — I wonder if it was the timing of the remark more than anything,” said another.

A third wrote: “You meant well OP, and I thought it was adorable.”
