On Friday, Feb. 21, Simpson released her first original song in years titled"Use My Heart Against Me.“In addition to the sexy pop-country track, the singer-songwriter released abehind-the-scenes videoof its creation.

“I was a little nervous for the writing session. I was like, ‘Do I read my notes? Do I not read my notes? But I do have lyric ideas.’ So it was like… I’m just gonna go for it. So I just started reading off and it’s all ‘use my heart against me.’ I had come in with that line,” Simpson, 44, said in the video.

Her cowriter Joe Ginsberg added, “From the moment Jess walked in, to telling us her whole story, we knew right off the bat the vulnerability is there, we’re going to be able to make something real. Then she pulls out not one, but a plethora of journals.”

In “Use My Heart Against Me,” Simpson returns to her country roots. Speaking with PEOPLE ahead of its release, the star said it was"a sexy song to write.”

“I woke up with that lyric in my head,” she said. “It’s kind of craving someone that you want again and you don’t care if your heart is used against you – if it’s just for one night. Like, give it over, just for the experience again.”

“I didn’t necessarily want it at the beginning of writing this record. I was in a different place,” she continued.

Simpson had lastreleased a cover of Nothing but Thieves' “Particles"in 2021, as well as six songs with thedrop of her audiobookin 2020. The new song will be featured on her new EP,Nashville Canyon, Part 1,which is set for release on March 21.

“Music makes you un-become to become, and through this process my soul has been pulled to the very place it belongs,” she began in the caption section.

“To the girl I was, I love you. To the woman I am, I am proud of you. To the woman I am becoming, I am excited for you….lets do this…it’s GO TIME,” she concluded.

Simpsonalso revealed to PEOPLEthat her daughter Maxwell, 12, was the inspiration for her return to her roots. For her 11th birthday, she wanted to go to Nashville.

So they took a family trip to a ranch in Franklin, Tenn. and instead of singing “Happy Birthday,” Maxwell asked Simpson to wake her up to “I Saw the Light.”

“I got chills all over my body,” Simpson, who also shares Ace, 11, and Birdie, 5, with estranged husbandEric Johnson, said.

“My daughter led me back to Nashville," she added. “That’s where I recorded my first gospel record at 15 years old and I had to come back. My daughter, her wanting to see the light, showed me the light.”
