Jimmy Carterhas arrived at the United States Capitol one last time.
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the former president’s remains were transported from Georgia to Washington, D.C., where he was welcomed with a horse-drawn procession to the Capitol steps.
Carter’s casket will be on display under the Capitol dome until his state funeral on Thursday, Jan. 9, after which he’ll return to his final resting place —his longtime home in Plains, Ga.

Carter’s family accompanied his remains on board Special Air Mission 39, which departed Atlanta on Tuesday morning and arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland early in the afternoon.
The late president’s casket was driven via motorcade to the U.S. Navy Memorial — a nod to his military service — and then transferred to a horse-drawn caisson that proceeded to the U.S. Capitol.
Navy members and the U.S. Army Band also marched in the procession, and spectators lined the streets amid freezing temperatures to get a glimpse.

Military body bearers received Carter’s casket outside of the Capitol on Tuesday afternoon and carried him into the rotunda. There, the 39th U.S. president will lie in state until Jan. 9, as members of the public are encouraged to pay their respects.
The military will sustain a guard of honor throughout the public visitation.

Carter’s funeral arrangements began Saturday, Jan. 4, followinghis death on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100.
The late president then arrived in Atlanta at the Georgia State Capitol, after which he traveled to the Carter Presidential Center. Tuesday marked the end of nearly two and a half days ofthe former president lying in reposeat the center.

On Thursday, the National Funeral Service will commence in Carter’s memory. After leaving the nation’s capital, Carter’s remains will be transported back to Georgia, where there will be a private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church.
