The town of Plains — with a population of less than 600 people — did not wait for President Carter’s return to Georgia to begin the bittersweet celebration of his life.

Across town, people camped out with signs and took pictures in front of his historic sites while they awaited his arrival. In the photo above, taken earlier on Thursday, park rangers with the National Park Service stream watch a live stream of the Washington, D.C., state funeral.

Year-round, Plains is something of a Carter-themed town, with several spots prominently displaying the former president’s name — including the places where he previously lived, worked and campaigned. A few days before the funeral, President Biden signed a bill from Congress to also rename the local Plains post office after Jimmy and Rosalynn.
