Johnny Manziel's Mother Michelle Charged with DWI in Texas: Report

Johnny Manziel’s mother reportedly has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

According to a report fromTMZ, Michelle Manziel, the mother offormer Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny, was arrested on Saturday night, March 1, in Kerrville, Texas, the Manziels' hometown located outside of San Antonio.

The outlet reported that Michelle was being held on $7,500 bail, adding that “it appears” her bail has been paid and she has been released from custody.

The Kerrville Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further information on Sunday, March 2.

Johnny, 32, a former star quarterback and Texas A&M alum who faced controversies throughout his football career, has previously been candid about his own struggles with drug and alcohol use.

He revealed in Netflix’s2023documentary seriesUntoldthat he had beendiagnosed with bipolar disorder, and that a 2016 incident which saw him accused of hitting and threatening ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley contributed to his drug use even more. (The charges were later dropped and he was asked to attend mandatory anger management classes, as well as rehab.)

“The wires in my head seemed twisted,” Johnny said in the docuseries, sharing that after his bipolar disorder diagnosis, he began struggling with suicidal thoughts and “really ramped up” his use of cocaine and oxycontin to “constant, daily” use.

In 2024, Johnny appeared on Shannon Sharpe’sClub Shay Shaypodcast, where he spoke about the troubled time after his exit from the NFL following the 2015 season. He revealed that he lost 40 lbs. while on “a strict diet of blow” and ignoredLeBron James’ phone calls.

“I was 210 lbs. when I left Cleveland, I was 170 lbs. sitting in Vegas that August, September, October,” he said at the time. “How do you lose 40 lbs.? You’re on a strict diet of blow.”

The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner wasn’t able to come to terms with his depression and drug use at the time, he said.

“At that point in time, man, I would look in a mirror and I didn’t see myself any different than when I was in Cleveland,” he explained. “Until I stepped on a scale at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, I didn’t realize I had lost 40 lbs. at all.”
