Kelly RipaandMark Consuelosare one of the longest-standing couples in Hollywood. The pair married in May 1996, one year after meeting on the soap operaAll My Children, and they have been together ever since.

The last few decades have been busy ones forthe coupleas they spent them raising their three now-adult children: Michael, 27, Lola, 23, and Joaquin, 22.

For PEOPLE’sinaugural Family Issuein 2020, theLive with Kelly and Ryanhost andRiverdaleactor opened up about their parenting skills.

“As you get older and you learn more, that youngest kid hopefully benefits from a little bit more wisdom … and hopefully fewer nerves,” Ripa said. “I think I had definitive ideas about raising girls versus raising boys, even though I don’t really believe in gender stereotyping. My sons are just as sensitive as my daughter, and my daughter is as strong as my sons.”

After sending their youngest, Joaquin, off to college, the pair officially became empty nesters. Ripa called the experience “brutally painful” on an episode ofLive with Kelly and Ryanand said, “It’s one of those things where you can never be ready.”

He spoke about the inconvenience of having “hip replacements” and “knee replacements” as a father before noting that he’s excited to become a grandfather one day. “I’m really looking forward to that. That’s about as much parenting as I want,” the actor said.

In April 2023, Consuelos officially became Ripa’s co-host onLive. Prior to that, the couple talked to PEOPLE aboutwhat the show has meant to their familyover the past 20-plus years.

“Now our children, who are adults, meet people who will come up to them and say, ‘Oh, I’ve watched you grow up. I’m so proud of you.’ And that means something to us,” Ripa said. To which Consuelos added: “This is going to be a really fun [chapter of life] that we can look back on, I know with great joy.”

Since graduating from college, Michael has followed in his father’s footsteps and is now pursuing a career as an actor, writer and director. In 2021,he joined his father on the set ofRiverdale, playing a younger version of his dad’s character, Hiram Lodge.

In addition to having acting in common with his father, apparently, Michael and Consuelos share a similarfashion sense. “My dad has a cool closet,” Michael said inPEOPLE’s 2022 Sexiest Man Alive issue, in a portfolio of famous sons. “I often raid my dad’s closet — and he always notices. However, Michael adds that he isn’t interested in the matchy-matchy look. “I got new glasses and then my dad texts me, ‘Where did you get those glasses?’ " Michael recalled. “And I’m like, ‘Oh no, can you at least pick a different color?’ My dad, my brother, and I will be wearing the same black pants and gray shirt and I’m like, I try to look a little different than that. I like to stand out a little bit.”

The family also told PEOPLE that out of everyone, Lola is the funniest.

“The funniest, hands down,” said Michael. Consuelos added, “She is just so smart and witty and funny, and she just gets it, you know? Lola knows exactly what people are about and how to handle herself in any situation.”
