In 2023, while promoting his role in the Netflix docuseriesQuarterback, Kirk spoke with PEOPLE about how it was important to him to continue playing football until his sons were old enough to enjoy and remember his career.

“I don’t think they quite understand it yet, but each year they take another step towards really playing a part of it, which has been fun for me,” Kirk said. “And so I made it a goal to play long enough before I retire that my boys could really remember it and will have enjoyed being a part of it.”

“It does mean a great deal to me that my boys could come to training, camp, practices and watch practice and play catch with us afterward, and come into [the] locker room after a special win,” he continued. “And they stay up late to watch the game because they’re so wanting to follow it.”

Julie also shared that her boys were becoming interested in learning about what their four-time Pro Bowl selection dad does and even who his teammates are.

“They do want to watch the game now. They care about the score,” Julie told PEOPLE in 2023. “They want to learn who Kirk’s teammates are, and that makes it even more fun for Kirk and I to teach them all about it. We look forward to more years where they can continue along with us and share that passion with us. It makes it so much more fun where we can include them.”

From their love of Legos to their trips to an NFL locker room, here’s everything to know about Kirk Cousins’ sons, Cooper and Turner.

“I’m sure many of you who are dads and moms know that it’s a special experience,” Kirk told ESPN in 2017. “I texted the coaches afterwards and said, ‘That was a top experience of my life so far.’ So I guess that says it all.”

Even if Cooper doesn’t try to become a star quarterback like his father, he may have a future in the NFL as a sports journalist. In March 2023, theNFLshared a video of him interviewing players, including his dad, Detroit Lions quarterbackJared Goffand retired New York Giants quarterbackEli Manningat the Pro Bowl.

The month prior, Kirk shared a video onInstagramof Cooper interviewing Kirk’s then-teammate Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson at the same event. When Cooper asked Jefferson who his best friend was, the athlete looked behind him and said, “Well, see the man right behind you? Your daddy? That’s my best friend.”

“Coop was asking some hard-hitting questions for my teammates…really trying to get the inside scoop 😂,” Kirk wrote in the caption.

Kirk is also well-known for his philanthropy and has brought Cooper along to some charity events. In 2023, Kirk shared photos onInstagramof himself and Cooper volunteering at the Salvation Army in Saint Paul, Minn., serving pie to Vikings fans on Thanksgiving.

Kirk previously told PEOPLE that he wants his kids to remember his career, so in December 2022, he created a moment Cooper would remember forever. After Kirk and the Vikings completed the biggest comeback in NFL history, overcoming a 33-0 halftime deficit against the Indianapolis Colts, Kirk brought Cooper into the locker room.

“I saw Adam [Thielen] bring his son Asher in so I thought this might be one of those moments where I can bring my son in, and he can have this as a memory and kind of be a part of it,” Kirk said inQuarterback.

Cooper expressed how proud he was of his father after sitting in on the postgame press conference.

“You worked as best as you can, Dad,” Cooper said to Kirk.

“Turner, that was awesome… the fact that you let Cooper go to the game in your place,” Kirk said inQuarterback. “Turner, that was so nice of you.”

“Every time he wants to go, I let him go when Mom wants him to go,” Turner replied. “Tomorrow, I’ll let him go again."

Turner has sinceloved attending Kirk’s football activitiesaround the Vikings facility with his big brother.

“When they can come around for practice, especially at training camp, everybody says hello to them. They’re big fans of Justin Jefferson just like everybody else,” Kirk told PEOPLE. “So, it’s fun to have ‘em around, and I think that’s kind of what it’s all about.”

“I had always wanted to get back into building Legos with my boys and when you’re playing football, it was hard to find the time,” Kirk said. “And then when I got injured, I thought if there ever was a time to do some Legos with the boys, it’s now.”

Kirk spoke about how both his boys like shows with the Kratt Brothers, includingWild KrattsandZoboomafoo. Turner also revealed that his favorite song is the theme song forPeppa Pig.
