On the Friday, March 7, episode of herAre You a Charlotte?podcast, Davis said that other than her character’s second husband, Harry Goldenblatt (Evan Handler),MacLachlan’s Trey was the “best match” for Charlotte, citing her own affection for theTwin Peaksstar and their chummy working relationship.
And MacLachlan agrees! At the Monday, March 10, iHeartPodcast Awards at SXSW, PEOPLE asked theBlink Twiceactor, 66, for his take on Davis’ polarizing opinion.

The characters’ love story did ultimately come to a sad end. After years of searching for an ideal husband, Charlotte married Trey midway throughSex and the City’s third season back in 2000. But their picture-perfect romance quickly devolved, with his erectile dysfunction and her fertility issues driving them apart. The characters ultimately finalized their divorce in season 5, but MacDougal’s last appearance on the hit show was in the fourth season finale, in a cameo that found him escorting his overbearing mother, Bunny (Frances Sternhagen) around a museum.
On her podcast, Davis revealed that the team behind Max’sSex and the CityrebootAnd Just Like That…had hoped to bring MacLachlan back for a guest appearance that would have seen Charlotte and Trey get some measure of closure on their failed marriage after years of not speaking. Davis admitted that she feels there is something “unfinished” about the characters’ storyline.
“So, I’m hoping that we can kind of revisit [that],” she said. “Maybe they run into each other, you know, just at an event or at a restaurant or something like that. I think it would be so amazing to have Kyle back on.”

Davis said MacLachlan, with whom she is still friendly, had resisted returning for the cameo. “I think he just didn’t want there to be kind of a sad note to the end. So, I get that,” she explained.

But MacLachlan tells PEOPLE that he’s still open to reprising hisSex and the Cityrole on the new series.
“I think it would be really fun to return, yeah, I do,” he said. “They had reached out. I just felt that the idea that they had — I wanted a little bit more to it. I wanted the relationship that we had to be a little deeper.”
“Maybe they’ll come back with another idea,” he added. “I’d be game.”
