In PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek of the episode, Lawrence is getting the lowdown on a case as Carl (James) — a top “success trainer” at his company, Outmatch Educational Consulting — listens in and writes in a notebook.
When he arrives in his office, Elsbeth immediately questions how well Lawrence knew Ethan.
“He was one of my early success stories,” Lawrence explains. “He was just a scrawny little kid in his high school drama club, always puffing on his inhaler. I helped him find fencing which changed his life.”
When asked if he knew about Ethan’s asthma, he replies, “He talked about that with everyone.”

“Oh, no, we usually start younger,” Lawrence says, to which Elsbeth responds, “That explains the sandbox.”
“Never too early,” Lawrence adds, which makes Elsbeth question how she raised her own son, Teddy.
“As long as he’s happy,” Lawrence teases.
