Jocelynn Rojo Carranza wasfound unresponsivein her Gainesville, Texas, home on Monday, Feb. 3, the Gainesville Police Department confirmed in a Thursday, Feb. 20.press release. Five days later, she died at a local hospital, according to the new release as well as the girl’sobituary.
Her mom Marbella Carranza alleged that her daughter was bullied about her family’s immigration status, reported CNN affiliate KUVN.
Marbella claimed that her daughter’s school, Gainesville Intermediate School, was aware of the alleged bullying and offered her daughter counseling, but said she only learned this later from investigators.
The Gainesville Independent School District issued a statement to PEOPLE, that did not explicitly acknowledge any awareness that Jocelynn had been bullied. “While we cannot comment on specific student matters due to privacy laws, we want to emphasize that we take all reports of bullying and student safety concerns very seriously,” read the statement. “Our district follows strict protocols for investigating any allegations, and we are committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for every student.”
Jocelynn’s death is being “actively investigated," the Gainesville Police Department told PEOPLE in a statement.
The Gainesville Police Department also extended “its deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family for their loss.”
“There are no words that could be spoken to ease their pain,” they added.

In her obituary,Jocelynn was remembered as a wonderful daughter, sister, niece and friend to everyone."
In addition to loving to dance and swing, she also enjoyed getting her nails done with her grandma and enjoying “movie night Fridays” with her family.
A funeral was held for her on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at St. Mary Catholic Church.
“Her story is a reminder to always be kind because you never know what someone is going through,” they added.
