“We were dispatched to a small aircraft that had crashed into a wooded area off of Reddington Landing in Hampton,” Hampton Deputy Fire Chief Nathan Denio tells PEOPLE. “When we arrived on scene, there was a single plane on the ground amongst some trees. The pilot was walking about, so he self-extracted from the plane. He was uninjured.”

Lennon was the sole passenger on board and said that he had flown into the airspace hundreds of times prior to the accident.

“I knew about a half a second before I crashed that I couldn’t recover it,” Lennon told local stationNBC10 Boston. “I just tried to stay with it 100%, and I’m just fortunate that I didn’t hit anything else and I walked out without a scratch, basically.”

“I was shooting for the end of the runway and I just obviously didn’t make it, and it was just closer to the houses than I thought,” Lennon told localABC station WCVB5.

The terrifying incident was caught on the Ring camera of resident Chris Martin and shows the shadow of the plane passing over his home before the aircraft landed in the trees across the street.

“Pretty scary to know that you live next to an airport and see something like this,” Martin told WCVB5.

TheHampton Fire Departmentsecured the aircraft and made sure there was no leaking fuel or other hazards, and stayed on the scene until the Federal Aviation Administration arrived and began their investigation. The FAA shared on Tuesday evening that they are in the “beginning stages” of their investigation into the crash.
