Rescue Caught on Camera of Dad and Son Who Survived Being Stranded Overnight Thanks to 'Miracle' Backpack

In a Tuesday, Feb. 18, news release from theUtah Department of Public Safety, the pair — later identified as Julian Hernandez and his 12-year-old son — were found from a steep cliffside in Snow Canyon.

According to the department, the two became lost while hiking on Sunday, Feb. 16, and were stranded overnight.

“Search and rescue teams with Washington County Sheriff Search & Rescue worked through the night, and into the early morning hours, the helicopter crew located two stranded on a shallow ledge and hoisted them to safety,” authorities said.

Ultimatley, the father and son were safely rescued and hoisted back up into the helicopter.

“We ended up climbing through some red rocks, and we came across this backpack when we were already finding ourselves in a tough situation,” he said.

The teen tossed his backpack after he was stuck on a ledge overnight, hoping to remember it later. But he was unable to retrieve the bag once he was rescued.

“We didn’t have the proper things,” he said. “The first thing that came to my mind was to find shelter.”

The two eventually used emergency blankets they found inside the bag to keep warm while they were outside for 22 hours, according toFOX affiliate KSTU.

Levi toldNBC Newsthat he was glad that the sack became of great use to the pair.

“That’s what the backpack was intended for … to help someone,”  the boy said.

The dad also told the outlet that he would like to meet Levi one day and thank him in person.
