Curtis tells PEOPLE she signed on to make the movie after learning Anderson — whom she had never met — would play the lead role.

“I knew that this was going to give Pam that opportunity to be an artist. And I just wanted to be a part of it,” she says.

“I made horror movies when I was 19 years old, and I’ve waited a long time to be an artist. And I get to be an artist now,” says theHalloweenfranchise alum.

“I literally just wanted to be on the other side of a scene with her because I knew she was going to do what she does in the movie,” Curtis adds of Anderson.

Curtis, who won an Oscar in 2023 for her work inEverything Everywhere All at Once, previously toldEntertainment Weeklyabout her dramatic transformation forThe Last Showgirl, which also stars Brenda Song, Billie Lourd and Kiernan Shipka.

The actress “immediately had a lot of ideas about what she would look like and what her backstory was," Curtis said of Annette. “I called my wig maker and we were off to the races.”

“She has that leathered look,” Curtis added. “There is that term that is kind of a pejorative of, particularly, women that says they look like they were rode hard and put away wet.”

The Last Showgirlis in select theaters now before going wider Jan. 10.
