Sheryl Crow Recalls Her Very First Grammys: ‘It Was a Game Changer’ (Exclusive)

Sheryl Crowwill never forget her very first Grammys experience.

On Sunday, Feb. 2, PEOPLE spoke to the “First Cut Is the Deepest” singer, 62, on the2025 Grammysred carpet live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles before she opened the show.

During the conversation, Crow looked back at her decades-long career and shared what it felt like to win big for the first time.

“Thirty years ago, here in Los Angeles,” the songwriter tells PEOPLE, thinking about the night she won best new artist, record of the year and song of the year all in the same evening.

“It was a game changer,” she adds.

Crow also reflected on her very special date.

“I had my 85-year-old grandmother, who had never been in a limousine. I mean we were like country. We were like the Beverly Hillbillies, right?” the Missouri native tells PEOPLE. “It was a big deal.”

Fast-forward to tonight, Crow says performing at the 2025 Grammys is sure to be “very emotional.”

Crow tells PEOPLE, “So we’re doing ‘I Love LA.’ It is very emotional. At rehearsal, people were breaking down, getting very emotional. It’s cool to be here tonight to be a part of what feels like a community.”

“People forget sometimes that even though an awards show feels competitive, this situation is made up of a community of musicians. For me, I came here as a young school teacher wanting to have a career in music 30 years ago, 35 years ago,” Crow says. “L.A. has a lot of layers to it. People that live here wind up staying here, raising their kids here, but it is a community. I think tonight really amplifies that.”
