Danson has a rich history with the Golden Globe Awards, having earned his first-ever nomination in 1984 for his role as Sam Malone inCheers. He went on to earn eight more nominations tied to the NBC sitcom, winning two Golden Globes for it in 1990 and 1991.
He also took home an award in 1985 for best actor in a limited series, anthology or motion picture made for television forSomething About Amelia.
In an interview with PEOPLE for last week’s issue, he said that getting to explore aging in the new Netflix series has been a particularly rewarding experience at this stage in his career.
“We get to explore aging, all those things that, in this country, sometimes we’re afraid to talk about, memory loss, everything, we broach with a tenderness and a seriousness still contained in a kind of light-hearted, joyful way,” he said. “I’m so happy because I’m 76 and I get to be part of this conversation, which is becoming more and more of my conversation in life.”

He also offered some sage advice to those who let their age hold them back, as he said, “For us people, my age and older, you still have something to contribute hugely. So get out there and keep going, and the way you engage life right up until the end is an inspiration to those younger people behind that are coming up and your children. Because a lot of times people think there’s a shelf life to creativity and contributing to life. There isn’t. That’s self-imposed.”
