A Texas woman is charged with murder after police say she fatally shot her husband, lit his truck on fire and fled the scene in a kayak.
Bexar County, Texas officials found the body of Tomas Calavera Jr. in a closet during a welfare check, according to reports fromKENS,KSATandCrossroads Today, citing an arrest affidavit.
That same day, deputies in Calhoun County responded to a report of a burning vehicle, the outlets reported. A witness reportedly told police that a woman, whom authorities later identified as Faith Paige Goynes, was allegedly seen walking away from the burning truck.
The outlets reported that deputies found Goynes paddling a kayak near the burning truck. Crossroads Today, citing the affidavit, reported that Goynes had severe burns and was in possession of Calavera’s ID.
Police reportedly determined that the burning vehicle had belonged to the victim.
Goynes is Calavera’s common-law wife, KSAT reported, citing deputies.

Goynes is charged with murder and arson causing serious bodily injury or death in the death of her husband. It was not immediately clear if she has retained an attorney or entered a plea.
The initial welfare check that led to the discovery of Calavera’s body was at the behest of the Calhoun County officials, KSAT reported; Calavera’s father went to his son’s home to locate him, but was unsuccessful.
Calavera’s body was discovered once Bexar County deputies searched the home.
