Let’s take it back to where it all began when Mars initially raced through Cancer from Sept. 4 to Nov. 3 last year, giving us a glimpse of what to expect in the months to come before the planet turned retrograde. The heavens were “complex” at this time, according tocelebrity astrologerKyle Thomas.

Mars crossed a “threshold” known as the pre-shadow phase on Oct. 4, resulting in a “slower pace of life” that will be felt once again when the planet returns on Feb. 23. Similar situations and experiences that happened then may be “directly tied” to the date that’s to come.

While Mars is sure to keep this speedier pace up until April 18, Thomas says it’s important to focus on how we are “handling our emotional energy” and “engaging in our relationships” at this time. It’s also crucial to understand the themes this planet and zodiac sign possess.

“Mars is the archetype of the warrior,” he says, explaining that it “charges into battle aggressively” and is eager to “seize the day.” The planet can bring us “vitality and strength” — but when frustrated, can cause “frustration, conflict and rage.”

Cancer, meanwhile, isn’t one of the zodiac signs that Mars “fits” into like Aries, Scorpio and Capricorn. Rather than “radiate brightly” like it would in its preferred zodiac signs, Mars is “known to be in a point of total weakness” when it moves through Cancer.
