Police in Missouri say a woman and infant were rescued from an icy creek after the car they were in was involved in a rollover crash.

Officers and firefighters in Liberty responded to the single-car crash on Tuesday, Jan. 14, and found an SUV on its driver’s side in an icy creek, according to a news release from theLiberty Police Department(LPD).

The car “was on its driver’s side” when crews arrived at the scene “and the passengers were trapped inside,” police said.

One officer became submerged in the water “when the ice gave way” while he and the assistant fire chief were approaching the vehicle.

Despite being up to his waist in “frigid water,” the officer was able to reach the car and “used a tool to cut open the windshield and gain access to the driver.”

The officer helped free the woman “through the windshield,” according to the LPD. Then, it was the infant’s turn to be rescued.

“Fortunately, the car seat was on the passenger side of the vehicle and not exposed to the water,” police said.

The officer who fell in the creek “was also transported to the hospital due to prolonged exposure to the frigid water," per authorities.

“We are proud to share this story as just one spotlight on the dedication of our officers and the LFD show to our community every day,” police said.
