Usher Reveals the 'Boundaries' He and Wife Jennifer Established to Protect Their Relationship

Usherknows how to keep business and pleasure separate.

While discussing how his wife, who is a record executive, supports Usher, 46, he said that he’d prefer to not work together. “I definitely rely on her opinion about things. She’s an incredible sounding board and brings calm to some of my madness sometimes,” he said.

“But if we had to work together, oh my God, it wouldn’t work. It would damager our relationship.”

Usher said that they have a “policy” together. “If this is a business that you’re in, I’m going to help establish and work on it. But it’s your business, you know, and then we have the things that we do together, but it’s not a mandate,” he explained. “It’s a choice in relationship.”

“Your things are your things, my things are. I have something I’m passionate about. I need your support, I need your help, I want to get counsel,” he continued. “But those kinds of boundaries established, I think hopefully gonna make this a more sustainable relationship.”

Usher also explained the importance of communication in their relationship which involves known how to listen to one another. “She understands my language and I understand hers,” he told hostKeke Palmer.

“We understand how to hear each other, but more than hearing each other, we know how to listen. It’s one thing to have space to talk, but to have ears to hear, that is the difference in having successful relationships in life, period.”

He added: “And having someone who comes from the world or either the idea of that world and what it takes in terms of dedication and commitment, it actually helps. It really does help.”

The couple sparked romance rumors in 2016 when Goicoecheashared a picture on Instagramof herself looking cozy, whispering into Usher’s ear. They eventually went public with their relationship in 2019 and dated for several years before getting married.

Usher told PEOPLE about his and Goicoechea’s relationshipin February 2024 days before theyobtained a marriage licenseandtied the knot in Las Vegas.

“When you find someone that you know is a great partner, of course it is an honor and a pleasure to be able to share life with someone who wants to share it with you and loves you, who you are,” he said at the time.

“We’ve obviously made a commitment to life for life together because of our children,” Usher continued. “It wouldn’t be odd for us to get married. We already did here. You know what I’m saying?”

Usher added, “And we’re going to be in each other’s lives until we die, obviously, because we have something to share. That’s beautiful. Our children. But not because of that. I really do feel like I have an amazing partner that I respect.” They share daughter Sovereign Bo, 4, and son Sire Castrello, 3.

Usher has previously been married twice – to stylistTameka Fosterfrom 2007 to 2009 and managerGrace Miguelfrom 2015 to 2018.

He and Foster, 54,share sons Usher “Cinco” V and Naviyd Ely.
