The American film industry was forever changed when cinematographerHalyna Hutchinswas tragically shot on the set ofRust.

“To lose my sister at least personally for me was a horrible experience and it is one of the biggest losses of my life,” Zemko said ina 2023 statement. “It is for this reason that I would like those who are at fault for somebody to carry that responsibility.”

On March 11, Halyna’s friend Rachel Mason released the Hulu documentaryLast Takeabout the loss of her loved one. The director said that she followed through on the project because of Matt.

“After Halyna died, her husband Matt asked me to make a film about her life,” she told theLos Angeles Times. “But, I realized I couldn’t make a film about her life if I didn’t understand how she died.”

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on the set ofRuston Oct. 21, 2021. The cast and crew were filming at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico when Baldwin, who stars in the film, discharged a prop gun that contained a live round.

The wound left Halyna, 42 at the time of her death, critically injured. She was airlifted to the hospital whereshe died of her injuries. Director Joel Souza, who was also injured in the incident, survived.

Halyna’s death rattled the film industry and served as a catalyst for conversations about on-set safety, in particular the use of real firearms in film production.

While Halyna moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career ambitions in film, her family remained in Ukraine. In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Halyna’s husband Matt posted on X about his wife’s parents.

“Halyna’s family is trapped in Kyiv because of the danger of travel,” he wrote, perNPR. “Her mother continues to work in the hospital where she has been a nurse for over a decade because her country needs her, but also because they cannot leave safely.”

At the time, Matt’s attorneys confirmed to PEOPLE that Halyna’s sister, Zemko, along with her 3-year-old daughter,made it to the Romanian borderin an attempt to evacuate.

In a February 2022 conversation withTODAYco-anchorHoda Kotb, Matt said, “The idea that the person holding the gun and causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me.”

He also spoke highly of his late wife, calling her “incredibly ambitious.” Matt added, “Right away when I met her I saw her ambition and I just felt like if I could have that ambition in my life, what could I accomplish?”

In 2021, a friend of Halyna’s told PEOPLE that the couple had a “beautiful partnership… [They] supported each other’s dreams.”

Since his wife’s death, Matt has become involved in advocating for increased safety practices within the film industry, emphasizing the need for more regulations on on-set firearms as a protection for cast and crew members.

“In the end, justice won’t bring Halyna back but maybe the memory of her can help keep people safe and prevent something like this from ever happening again,” he shared on TODAY.

Matt fileda wrongful death lawsuit in 2022, which was settled seven months later and left him as the executive producer ofRust.

The following year, the Hutchins familyfiled a lawsuit against Baldwin, the film’s producers and several crew members, which was paused while awaiting the end of the actor’s manslaughter trial. After the charges against Baldwinwere dismisseddue to the alleged mishandling of evidence, the Hutchins family lawsuit was allowed to move forward.

On March 3, 2025, the family’s lawyer, Gloria Allred,filed a notice of depositiondemanding that Baldwin testify on the stand in early May.

OnX, he wrote a two-part note, saying: “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours.”

Baldwin continued, “I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.”

In the pilot episode of his 2025 reality show,The Baldwins, the actor spoke about Halyna’s death. “I think about her every day,” he said, while noting the toll the tragedy has taken on his own life.

Halyna’s family is continuing to advocate for gun safety on film sets, speaking out about the memory of their loved one and raising her son. Two years after the cinematographer’s death, her mother Olga and the family’s attorney Allred,visited her grave and left flowers.

The Hutchins family and Matt have also criticized Baldwin’s 2025 TLC reality seriesThe Baldwins.Around the time of the series premiere, Allred and other attorneys working for Halyna’s family filed a notice of deposition in their wrongful death lawsuit.

“It is long overdue for Alec Baldwin to admit and face the real-life consequences that he caused Halyna’s parents and sister. It is time for him to face reality under oath,” they wrote in a statement.

“Is his reality show just a veiled attempt to create sympathy for himself with a future jury pool in our civil case? Is this just a shameless attempt to portray him as the real victim in this case?” the statement asked.

It also claimed that the actor “never called or tried to contact her parents or sister to say that he was sorry, and to this day he has never taken responsibility for Halyna’s death.”

After Matt’s lawsuit was settled, he was put in charge of finishing the production ofRust. During Hulu’sLast Takedocumentary, actor Josh Hopkins said that he originally didn’t want to finish the movie.

“They said Matt [Halyna’s husband] wants it done. I said, ‘Look, I believe you. But I’m not coming back for anything unless I hear it from his mouth,’ " he said. “They put me on a Zoom with him. He said he wanted it finished and she would want it finished and people to see her work.”

Olga was also interviewed inLast Takeandshared openly about the loss of her daughterand why she supported the finishing ofRust.

“Maybe some people didn’t want it. But I wanted this to happen because it was a big work of Halyna. She wanted this movie to be finished,” she said. “I will watch the movie. Absolutely. I want to see my daughter’s work. It’s her big work.”

Olga continued, “I also wanted this to happen for Andros. I want him to be proud of his mother.”
