Bennet was born in 1992 in Chicago and is the only girl of six brothers. She described growing up with three biological brothers, two foster brothers and one adopted brother as a “frat house mixed with the United Nations.”

“Two (of my brothers) are black and one is Mexican and Filipino, and then I am half-Chinese,” she told theChicago Tribunein 2013. “We used to wrestle and do that kind of stuff and I was just a tomboy. And I really got into the arts because I tried every sport and was just terrible, so I was like, the only thing for me to do is be creative.”

Throughout her decade-long career, Bennet has appeared in shows likeNashvilleandDaveand films likeValley Girl. But she’s probably best known for solving supernatural crimes as Daisy “Skye” Johnson on the ABC Marvel showAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which ran for seven seasons until 2020.

The actress told theChicago Readerin 2016 that Skye was the kind of role that would make her younger self proud. “I never dreamt of being a princess, I wanted to be a superhero," Bennet said.

Bennet is Chinese-American and was born Chloe Wang. She toldNPRin 2017 that she decided tochange her last nameprofessionally because “an uncomfortable amount” of the feedback she received from auditions had to do with her not looking how people expected her to look.

“I had a casting director tell me ‘You’re not quite white enough for the role, but you’re not quite Asian enough for the best friend role,’ ” Bennet said. “That kind of continually happened and my dad’s first name is actually Bennet. So in Chinese culture, your father’s name is a really big honor and so it only felt natural to take his first name, so I still honor him in that way.”

She was a pop star in China

Before she became an actress, Bennet was briefly a pop star in Shanghai. She moved to China when she was around 15 to live with her paternal grandmother and releasedthree singlesunder her birth name, Chloe Wang: “Uh Oh,” “Every Day In Between” and “This Is Called Home.”

“In Asia, I didn’t feel like I was Chloe,” she said. “I felt like I was acting like someone in Asia. I was acting like Chloe Wang, a pop star, that was like a character for me, if anything.”
