Whoopi Goldberg Brings Daughter Alex to Oscars 34 Years After She Joined Mom for Her WinningGhostNight in 1991

The iconic actress, 69, walked the red carpet at the 2025 Oscars with her daughter,Alex Martin, as her date. During an interview withE! News,Goldberg reflected on the many Academy Awards she has attended, including the 1991 ceremony when she took home a win for her role inGhost.

“I brought my kid,” she said of the exciting night 34 years ago. “And now she’s with me again!”

“It’s all good,” she added.

The Viewco-host was first nominated for Best Actress for 1985’sThe Color Purple, but the award went to Geraldine Page forThe Trip to Bountiful. Six years later, Goldbergwon Best Supporting Actress forGhost.

She continued, “My brother’s sittin' there, he says, ‘Thank God we don’t have to listen to anymore. You can do it now.’ My mom’s home, everybody’s watching….”

“I want to thank everybody who makes movies. I come from New York. As a little kid, I lived in the projects, and you’re the people I watched,” she went on to say. “You’re the people [who] made me want to be an actor. I’m so proud to be here. I’m proud to be an actor and I’m gonna keep on acting. And thank you so much."

In October 2024, Goldberg revealed that her daughter joined her the year of her big win afterher mom opted out of attending.

“My mother didn’t come when I won. She came when I was nominated forColor Purple, but she didn’t wanna be there in case I didn’t win again,” Goldberg explained.

Martin has gushed over her close relationship with her mom in the past, with Goldberg even saying the two were best friends.

“I’m proud to call her my best friend,” Goldberg said of her daughter while introducing her as a guest onThe Viewin 2016. “She is one of the most trustworthy and loyal people I know.”

Goldberg also shared some of her favorite things about Martin.

“She is somebody who makes me laugh, like ‘bwuaha’ laugh,” she said. “We can talk to each other any time during the day or night. I just like her a lot.”

Later, in May 2024, Goldberg told PEOPLE what she has learned from Martin, 51.
