Podcast host Christian Wallace co-createdLandmanwith Sheridan and toldColliderin November 2024 that the show remains true to the outlandish and occasionally harsh realities of working and living in an oil town. He even keeps an “ongoing list” of potential storylines based on what he hears from friends who still work on the rigs.

“I talk to my buddies in the oil field all the time,” said Wallace, who grew up in Andrews, Texas and spent a year working on drilling rigs. “They’ll tell me stuff, and I’m like, ‘Hold on, write that down.’ Because there’s yet another crazy way to die or an interesting, funny tidbit."

The season 1 finale ofLandmanpremiered on Jan. 12, 2025, and left the fate of Tommy and other principal characters up in the air. Paramount+ hasn’t confirmed a future installment of the show, but the cast and crew have vocalized their hopes to continue the story.

The finale episode ofLandman’s inaugural season saw a major shift for Tommy’s career — and the supposed death of one of the show’s most pivotal characters.

Though fans questionedwhether or not Monty had actually died, Wallace confirmed the character’s death toVarietyin January 2025. “When you take one major player off the board, it opens up opportunities for other players,” the co-creator said, “and I think that’s all I’m at liberty to say at this point."

One of those opportunities was made clear inLandman’s final episode when Tommy agreed to take over M-Tex, fulfilling his boss’ final wishes. Thornton toldThe Hollywood Reporterin January 2025 that even though his character “probably doesn’t want to” lead as CEO, he’ll do so out of a “debt to his old friend and boss.”

Paramount+ has yet to confirm a second season ofLandman. However, Moore said at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, that she would return to play her character as an oil tycoon’s wife who has “lots of nice clothes" and hinted that filming for season 2 would begin soon.

“I thought we looked really good,”The Substanceactress said of her on-screen husband, perDeadline. “[Hamm] was lovely and I’ve known Billy Bob Thornton for a long time. I’ve already completed the first season and I’m excited for us to start the second which will be at the beginning of next year.”

“I would also hope that we explore the weird position that Tommy is in with Andy’s character,” theGoliathactor said in January 2025. “Tommy isn’t dealing with henchmen anymore. He knew how to deal with them. But now he’s got a smart guy on the opposite side of the law who is his equal."

He continued, “We’re in a chess match, and I hope that’s explored.”

Nothing has been confirmed, but Thornton and Moore have expressed interest in continuing their roles onLandman.Ali Larter, who plays Tommy’s not-so-ex-wife Angela, also toldEllein January 2025 that the show’s production has a timeline set for the next season.

“I love the relationship between Tommy and Angela,” theVarsity Bluesactress said. “We’re going to see, as the [next] season unfolds, that Angela’s going to be in a different place in her life again. I think that her priorities have changed, so you’ll see some of that unfolding.”

Michelle Randolph, who plays Tommy’s daughter Ainsley, told PEOPLE in January 2025 that she hopes her character will “evolve as a person” in the next season.

When willLandmanseason 2 filming start?

Thornton toldEntertainment Weeklythat ifLandmanwere renewed for a second season, filming would likely begin in February or March of 2025. However, Paramount+ has yet to confirm the show’s future.

“I understand that if we’re going to do that, season 2, that it’s going to be sometime around February, March, somewhere in there,” he told the outlet in August 2024. “I mean, we’ll see. It just depends on how the chips may fall, you never know in this business. But if we do it, I think [we’re] going to try to do it around that.”

What has Billy Bob Thornton said about returning toLandman?

As far as Thornton is concerned, Tommy’s story is just getting started. In a January 2025 interview withThe Wrap, the1883actor discussed how he thinks his character will handle his new responsibilities.

“I think Tommy’s driven to make it a success, but at the same time, scared s——- right now, to take this on, and probably does not want to do it,” Thornton said. “He does not want to take any kind of an executive position. And I got a feeling, if there were a season 2 [another wink] that he’s going to drag a lot of the landman into it.”
