A woman slipped not-so-subtle engagement ring hints into her boyfriend’s sandwich. Unbeknownst to her, he saved her note for their engagement a year later.

“I did it as a joke!” Taylor tells PEOPLE. “You know how you or your friends at lunch would sometimes find a note from their parent in their lunch box? I was being funny and stuffed it in his bag one day … We love Italian cutlet sandwiches and this was our first year living together so I really wanted to impress him with my meals.”

She specifically wanted an “emerald cut” diamond that was “no smaller than 1.75” carats. For her band, it should be “solitaire” or “preferred [with] baguettes.” Having a “halo” or “pavé” were absolute no-nos. She also reminded her boyfriend, Cam C., that her ring size is “5.5.”

Taylor, now 28, didn’t expect Cam, now 27, to take her joke seriously, especially because he never reacted to her special “marry me” sandwich. “We never spoke of it!” she recalls. “He doesn’t have TikTok so had no clue I even called it that. Another day, another lunch to him.”

Flash forward to July 2024 and Cam popped the question with Taylor’s dream ring.

The couple — who started dating in 2018 — were on vacation with friends on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. On their final night, the pair were supposed to pick up their friends for dinner, but Cam kept making wrong turns. Eventually, he pulled over to where a surprise proposal was set up.

“I was in shock, I had absolutely no idea!” Taylor says. “He thought of everything, [I was] very impressed. I’m not usually at a loss for words, but I was speechless. I think I said, ‘Are you serious?!’ before saying, ‘Yes!’ I never thought he’d keep the Post-it so when I saw the ring, I was shocked it was exactly what I was eyeing online.”

After the proposal, one of the couple’s friends asked Cam how he picked out exactly what Taylor wanted because they never went ring shopping together. “He pulled it [the Post-it note] out of his wallet. I had no idea he kept it,” Taylor says. “So for a year, he kept it in his wallet.”

Taylor gets a lot of praise for her sparkling stone, so she recently set the record straight on TikTok on who should actually be credited for the perfect ring. “He did so good 💍,” Taylor wrote in an onscreen caption of a video posted on March 6. “Thanks this is a video of me writing exactly what I wanted on a Post-it note two years ago and stuffed it into the sandwich I dubbed the ‘marry me’ sandwich.”

“Download Pinterest on their phone. Make a board with all the rings you want. They start getting targeted ads for said rings,” one TikToker suggested, while another wrote, “Me sending my husband pics of the rings I wanted every day until he proposed 🤭.”
