A woman put hot sauce on lasagna thather mother-in-lawmade — and she’s now wondering if she made a major misstep.
“Since neither of us were working, we agreed, and offered to help her so we can all cook and eat together and it’s less work for her,” the Redditor wrote.
However, the woman says her mother-in-law didn’t accept the help — nor an offer to help cover the cost of groceries for the meal — as she “wanted to do something nice for us.”
The woman went on to share that her husband’s mom arrived much earlier in the day than she and her husband anticipated and proceeded to spend eight hours making lasagna and roasted potatoes, noting that most of the time went to simmering a meat sauce.

The original poster (OP) says that she thanked her mother-in-law “multiple times” for the gesture — even though “her coming around for such a long period was more than we had discussed” and meant “we had to reschedule some plans we had made for earlier that day.”
The OP then explained that the “problems started” when it came time to eat.
“We keep condiments in the middle of the dinner table, and I put some hot sauce on my plate,” the woman — who says she loveshot sauce— recalled.
The woman says her husband attempted to defend her, but her mother-in-law is now telling other family members thatshe is “ungrateful.”

“I’m not sure if what I did was actually wrong or not,” the woman concluded before asking her fellow Redditors if she was the “a——” in this situation.
“Ehhh. I get it,” shared one Reddit user, adding, “I’m married to a hot saucer. But it sucks when you work hard on a dish and they immediately dump a bunch of hot sauce on it. It’s like they’re saying, here, fixed it!”
“IMHO [in my humble opinion], when trying something new, try it first before dousing it in a condiment,” added another.

However, others felt that the mother-in-law’s reaction was the real problem — regardless of whether or not the OP should have added hot sauce to the dish.
“[…] The MIL’s reaction and behaviour were ridiculous and there is no excuse for it. This needs to be dealt with now (kudos to the husband for backing his wife up) or things are going to be difficult with her going forward,” chimed in one person.
“NTA [not the a——],” said another. “There are so many real things in the world to get mad about, or even be offended over. This is not one of them.”
