Doechii’s beauty tricks are sparking a whole lotta buzz.

The rapper first caused a stir for wearing visible face tape in 2024, clarifying in a TikTok video that it’s an intentional part of her look. Along with the caption reading “addressing the face tape 😒,” Doechii shared simply: “The face tapes are there on purpose because… it’s c—."

The musician wore face tape again for her performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards, where she took home herfirst trophyfor best rap album.

According to her makeup artistDee Carrion, the look was absolutely intentional.

“They are visible because we think it’s cool,” Carrion tells PEOPLE. “We even rhinestoned them during her performance to make them even more visible.” The artist further explained, “We wanted to bring an editorial vibe to something that was very glam. We just like the way it looks and the effect it gives.”

As for Doechii’s Grammys makeup as a whole, she says she “wanted to keep the glam a little more pulled back because the outfits and hair were such major moments.” On the day of the event, they decided on a monochromatic gray eye look with grey-brown contacts and a hint of sparkle.

“To create the perfect grey smokey liner I used theUrban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Waterline Eyeliner Pencil in Cool Coyotein her waterline and outer third of her eye for that perfect soft look,” Carrion shared.

Despite ruffling feathers on social media, face tape like Doechii’s is nothing new.

“This type of cosmetic face tape has actually been around for a long time,“Dr. Rukmini Rednam,aboard-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, tells PEOPLE. “It has usually been used a quick fix to lift your skin or change angles on your face. The way it is designed, it is meant to be hidden, giving the effect that you might have had a surgical procedure without actually having one.”

“Face tape is budget-friendly, pain-free, and gives instant results, making it appealing for those who want the look of a brow lift and facelift, without the commitment,” says board-certified plastic surgeonDr. Akshay Sanan. “It’s also a gateway trend; many who try face tape may later explore more long-lasting treatments like Botox, fillers, or even surgical brow lifts and facelifts. For longer term results, face tape can also help train muscles not to contract, adds board-certified facial plastic surgeonDr. Prem Tripathi, MD, MPH.

“[Face tape] is becoming more popular because it is trying to mimic neurotoxin like Botox, and it is significantly cheaper,” Dr. Tripathi explains. “However, there is no solid evidence that it has long-term benefit, especially when the tape is removed unless people are training themselves to not use these muscles long-term.”
